A Winning Strategy Across the Board

Anyone who knows me is aware that I’m a huge Ohio State fan.  The start of each new college football season is something I really look forward to.  With the buckeyes getting off to a strong new start (new era actually) it got me thinking about some possible parallels between a winning football strategy and a winning career strategy. Here are four:

Lesson #1:  Spend your time pursuing what you really want.

Real Life: Life happens to all of us sixty seconds at a time, whether we are ready for it or not. Make the most of your time, and make sure you choose how you spend it – going after what you desire, or you’ll just get the scraps that happen to fall your way.  This quote sums it up perfectly…

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.

Lesson #2: Recruit and fill the roles you must with what you want, or they will be filled for you.

Real Life: It’s important to make an informed decision about what you want from job or career.  Failing to do can ensure a road map to frustration.  Do you want a job that just pays the bills or something else?   Every day we can make a choice: do we fill our lives with what we want, or will we just accept whatever life provides us?

Lesson #3: Play to your strengths – know what you are good at, and where your advantage lies.

Real Life: The simple truth is that you will have an easier time achieving goals and getting things that are in line with my strengths. But first you need to know what your strengths are and how you can best apply them.  One easy way to get a handle on this is see a career advisor and take a few career assessment tests.  Information is power!

Lesson #4: Don’t quit before you really get started!!

Real Life:  See the #’s 1-3 above!
